| Thank You Nascar |

Well, I wasn't going to write until friday but I just received word that effective immediately, Nascar has mandated head and neck restraints for all top three divisions. I applaud Nascar on taking this initiative and I think it is a major step in the right direction. Jeff Burton stated that he is glad that everyone will be wearing them, but he hates the fact that Nascar had to mandate it.He said he wishes everyone would have taken their own iniatives about safety and already had a restraint system. Jeff also feels that this could hinder improvements and further development and cause the current systems to stay status quo since they are now in use and mandated. Tony Stewart expressed concern over the devices yet again, stating that the biggest reason he doesn't wear one is that he is claustrophobic and feels "trapped" by the devices and can not focus and feels he would be a danger to other drivers. I don't know what it is like to be claustrophobic but I guess it can be a terrible thing. I hope for Tony's sake he can find something that works for him and I hope he doesn't try to beat the system and not wear one. Jeff Green has offered to pay for devices for any underfunded teams that can't afford them. Nice job Jeff!! You are a hero in my book!! Nascar has also announced a travelling medical crew like CART will be implemented and soft walls and driver restraints, seat belts, cockpit layout, etc. will all be adressed very soon with new rules for 2002. Excellent!!! Now, everyone do me a favor, let's not get in a debate over whether Nascar did this out of pressure or out of their own decision. The fact is they did it and we can all feel a bit better about our driver's safety. God bless!! Rob |
