What the Heck?

The Rock is over. Great race, lots of excitement, different leaders,
everything we like to see in a Nascar Race. And one glaring thing that we
hate to see but which has become the expected rather than the exception. A
huge HUH? at the end.
I realize everybody with a keyboard in front of them is banging out a
diatribe of some kind or another right about now, but I have a personal bitch
with Nascar's latest example of ineptitude. How do I tell the people that
I've tried so hard to convert to Nascar, in print, in person, and especially
in the stick and ball world of AM talk sports radio, that there really are no
rules, just some people that make decisions on a whim that dictate the
outcome of the race and the income of the racers?
It's hard enough when FOX starts off the broadcast with footage of The
Rock, not the racetrack but the wrestler, to convince folks of the legitimacy
of our favorite sport, but when it comes right down to making a serious
decision, the officials seem to be paying full attention to some heckler in
the audience so as not to be bothered by what's happening in the ring.
The thing that I find hard to describe, simply because I find it hard to
fathom, is what the heck is the rule? It can't be that hard. Can a race end
under yellow or not? Does Nascar wave red to stop a race so they can finish
under green or not?
I really don't care one way or the other, since I've watched yellow flag
finishes for years and become accustomed to this method, but to leave
something as important as the finish of a race involving millions of dollars
up to officials that throw out the rule book to write a best seller only
invites further criticism and outrage at a governing body that can ill afford
either.
The time to stop this nonsense is NOW. Before the next race declare in
clear and indisputable terms the rules of finishing Nascar Winston Cup Races.
Then, popular or not, simply enforce them as written. Anything less will only
further the degradation of Nascar in the eyes of the seasoned fan and the
prospective fan alike.
