We got many replies to my article on sponsors and how they are treated. One that stood out was this one from Tom Liggin
in Mass.:
NASCAR doesn't take the sponsors for granted, they just take them,
period. When you consider that auto racing is the only major entertainment
industry in which the performers pay to put on "the show" and then go after
every business they can to be the "official ---------" of NASCAR, it is no
wonder so many teams have difficulty lining up sponsors.
I may be wrong, but I believe if you took every penny Jeff Gordon won
on the track including the Championship dough, it would not cover the cost
operating the 24 team. There has to be something wrong with this picture.
The total purses paid out, some of which is contingency money coming from
outside of NASCAR is but a miniscule percentage of the gate and tv revenues.
Years ago, this may have worked fine, but in today's marketplace, the
only one it works fine for is nascar. Granted, none of the drivers and
owners are on welfare. However, they are entitled to a fair share of the
profits. People go to see the race not NASCAR. The only thing NASCAR does
is to provide a venue for racing. I realize this is an oversimplification,
but the vast majority of fans care little if anything about the NASCAR
organization, other than to identify it with the racing. Without the cars,
no one would show up a the track. Without NASCAR, people would still go to
see Earnhardt, Wallace, Gordon, Jarrett, etc., chase each other in circles.
I would love to see one shred of evidence that NASCAR is genuinely
concerned about anything other than their bank account. They make Scrooge
(pre spirit visits) look like a philanthropist.

Tom Liggin
Nicely put Tom. I found this e-mail interesting and thought I would share it.
What's your opinion on the subject?
