It is going to be so hard to not come off as showing favoritism for Dale Earnhardt Jr. But I am not NASCAR and I don't make or break my own rules, so that's my plea. But I find it rather hilarious that everyone is so quick to roast Junior at the stake for something he really has no control over and even more so for what took place on track. I think this is merely a case of wanting Junior's head.
Dale Jr. caused a huge wreck in Sunday's Daytona 500. He took out some very strong race cars, ten in all. The big one always happens, it's part of restrictor plate racing. No driver is immune from either being in the big wreck or causing it. Not even Dale Jr. But when it's Dale Jr. there is this unwritten rule that he has to be ridiculed, chastised, and basically become public enemy No. 1. This is not of his own making, it's the media and the fans who have chosen to put him on a pedestal only to want to see him be knocked off or fall off by his own doing.
On Sunday everyone got what they wanted, another reason to hate Dale Jr. I could list endless amounts of examples of similar situations that mirror what happened on Sunday, but that point is moot. Unless Dale Jr. caused it, was in it, or got a no-call by NASCAR over it, it won't matter. Fans and media want to be riled up over Dale Jr. They want him to fail, they want him to do wrong, and they certainly want NASCAR to show favoritism.
The biggest issue from this past weekend is how NASCAR has put themselves into a box with their over-policing. I did not see the race on Saturday so I cannot form an opinion on why Jason Lefler was penalized and how it was similar to Dale Jr.'s incident on Sunday. But, I can say this is clearly another example of NASCAR having too many rules for the sport. There have always been wrecks at the super speedways, especially when restrictor plates were added to the cars. Only now NASCAR wants to penalize those who cause wrecks? Last I checked wrecking was part of racing.
As the week moves on, Dale Jr. will be debated, hated, and become the un-favorite. But he held his own on and off the track. He didn't apologize for doing what he is paid to do. For once, he got up on the wheel and drove like he should. Drivers can be mad, fans can be mad, but Junior is a racer and guess what sometimes racers cause wrecks. Even Dale Earnhardt Jr.
