It’s been a rough start to the season for Sprint Cup rookie Joey Logano. Each week seems like a replay of the week before with damage repairs being made to the car after contact with the wall. The fabrication department at Gibbs has been busy since Daytona, but it hasn’t all been because of Logano. Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin have had their share of trials so far this season as well.
Personally I think Logano is just trying too hard. Taking over the seat of Tony Stewart, one of the best drivers in all of motorsports, along with the quality of equipment he has underneath him, and the hype that came with him being put in that ride came with something else……pressure.
The plans were for Logano to spend another year in the Nationwide Series, run selected cup races and then move to the Sprint Cup level, but Stewart’s departure to acquire majority ownership at Haas Racing and become driver/owner vaulted Joey to a Sprint cup seat earlier than expected.
Right now, he needs to concentrate on finishing races and gaining the respect and trust of the veterans he’s racing with. Once we start cycling through these tracks again, we’ll see Logano having a much easier time of it and he has one of the best crew chiefs in the business in Greg Zippadelli to lead him through the season.
Logano’s 13th place finish last weekend at Las Vegas was a good start to getting things back on the right track, hopefully he can have another good finish this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
I was actually fortunate enough to meet Joey at the Motorsports 2009 Show in Atlantic City, NJ back in January and was pleasantly surprised by the way he interacted with the fans. Some drivers sign autographs because they feel obligated to sign them, but there are others that do it because they appreciate the fans and the support they give to them and the sport. I watched as Joey made the day of this one young kid decked out in Home Depot garb. The look on that kids face when Joey knelt down to his level to sign for him and pose for a picture is something I won’t soon forget.
Can’t wait to see how this season shakes out for Logano, one thing’s fore sure, he’s going to make it interesting.
Until Next Time, Drive Fast …. Turn Left!
