Race fans are a fickle bunch, but loyal. They can also be very patient. Fans pull for a driver for various reasons. Some pull strictly for a driver based on the manufacturer he drives for. Some pull for a driver because their father, grandfather, etc. pulled for said driver. There are some who pull for drivers because they are, and I hate to even utter the words, hot. But whatever the reason, a fan is loyal. Sometimes that loyalty can be tested. A fan can make excuses until they are blue in the face about why their driver isn't doing well, caused a wreck, or any other infraction. But are there are times that there simply isn't an excuse. Dale Earnhardt Jr., it is time to give your fans better. Before Junior Nation bombards me with emails, let me explain. Dale Jr. is the top dog when it comes to popularity. He is the biggest draw at any event, the highest merchandise seller at every venue. He seems like a down to earth guy, someone fans can relate to with exception to the fame and wealth. But as a race fan, we need to see his on track performance exceed his off the track popularity. In other words, it's time to go. Mash the gas pedal and drive. Of course we cannot put complete blame on Dale Jr. the car is only as good as the crew who sets it up. So his crew and most importantly the crew chief need to give him better. He has everything he can possibly need at Hendrick Motorsports. The best of everything is at his disposal and yet we are seeing only mediocre results. Dale Jr. is a great race car driver. We have seen flashes of brilliance on track. Moves that would surely make his father proud. But just like his finishes, those moves are not consistent enough. It has been mentioned quite often, but perhaps the union between Dale Jr. and crew chief/cousin Tony Eury Jr. be dissolved. Maybe now is the time. Whatever magic they had before is not there now. Junior is loyal to his family, but he also has obligations to his sponsors, his team, and the loyal fans who stand behind him. Simply put, it is time for Dale Jr. to produce results on track. He is good enough, he has the equipment to get it done. If he cannot accomplish what we know he can, it's going to be hard to make an excuse for someone who has not lived up to his potential.
